Preparing for software engineering interviews feels like a mountain to climb. I get it. Coming from finance, where I was knee-deep in spreadsheets, the tech world can be intimidating. The whole coding interview process is like a different language. So I thought I’d share a few tips that helped me navigate the transition.
Practice coding challenges on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank. I started with easy problems, just to build confidence. The key is to really understand the patterns behind them. I would often get stuck, but that’s part of the learning. Don’t rush through them. Make sure you can articulate your thought process too. Sometimes, talking through your logic can save you if you hit a dead end.
Behavioral interviews are another beast entirely. Reflect on your past experiences in finance. Think of challenges you faced and how you tackled them. Maybe you led a team through a tough project or made a data-driven decision that saved costs. Those stories resonate, even if they’re not about tech directly. You just need to draw parallels to how those experiences shaped your problem-solving skills.
Don’t forget the culture fit aspect. Research the company’s values and see if they align with yours. When they ask, "Why do you want to work here?" you want a genuine answer. And, of course, prepare questions of your own. It shows you care and are genuinely interested. Let’s face it, a two-way street is always more pleasant than a one-sided road.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember you’re not alone. The tech community is full of people who started with different backgrounds. I’m still learning every day, and I would appreciate any additional advice from all of you. How did you tackle your own interview prep? It always helps to hear different perspectives.
