To tackle the autocomplete system, I began by outlining the core requirements: quick response times, high availability, and accurate suggestions. I proposed utilizing a trie data structure for its efficiency in prefix-based searches. However, when I moved onto handling large datasets and how to scale the system, I could see the interviewer’s expression change. My initial ideas were sound, but I quickly veered off track when discussing potential caching strategies and failed to connect them back to the core architecture.

The discussion shifted towards challenges like misspellings and varying input lengths. I suggested implementing a fuzzy search algorithm, which piqued the interviewer's interest. They posed a follow-up question about how many users we expected to support simultaneously and what scaling considerations I had. Here, I hesitated and didn’t provide a concrete estimate, which seemed to impact the interviewer’s perception of my system scaling knowledge.

As we moved deeper into considerations for a real-world scenario, I mentioned integrating with existing databases, possibly using Elasticsearch. The interviewer nodded, but I sensed they were looking for more innovative solutions. It became clear that I had not prepared adequately for the high-level architectural implications of scaling and keeping the system performant under heavy loads.

Overall, my initial concept was solid, but I struggled to maintain clarity when diving into specific implementation details. The interviewer did appreciate my initial approach and the use of different algorithms, yet it felt evident that I didn’t fully convey a cohesive design or address potential pitfalls sufficiently. Our discussion ended on an open note, with them appreciating the dialogue yet leaving some questions unanswered. It felt like I had a decent grasp on the topic, but a couple of missteps in elaboration cost me the fluidity of the conversation. I worry that might have left a slightly unfocused impression.
