I approached the design by outlining the fundamental components of a search autocomplete system, such as the query input, the backend storage, and how results could be returned in real-time. The interviewer seemed engaged and asked clarifying questions about scalability and how to manage latency, which prompted me to detail potential algorithms like tries or n-grams for efficient lookups.

A critical point where I faltered was in discussing the data handling, particularly when it came to updating the autocomplete suggestions based on real-time user inputs. I initially suggested a batch processing system, but the interviewer pushed back, indicating that real-time updates could improve user experience. While I later pivoted to a more effective solution involving streaming data pipelines, I felt I lost momentum there, and it was a significant moment in the interview.

Despite some missteps, I felt good about the overall interaction. The interviewer acknowledged my strengths in structuring the system and understood my approach to dealing with various edge cases. Still, there was noticeable hesitance in completely agreeing with my data update strategy. I haven’t received any feedback yet, but would welcome the opportunity to clarify my thoughts on a more refined architecture if possible.
