The interviewer asked me to design an e-commerce checkout flow. I started by laying out the main components: a shopping cart, user authentication, payment processing, and order confirmation. The interviewer seemed interested initially. I elaborated on user experience, including minimizing clicks and providing real-time updates on cart contents. However, I got caught up in discussing payment gateways too much and didn't focus on the broader architecture as much as I should have.

The interviewer probed deeper about scalability and how to handle a sudden influx of users during sales events. I mentioned using microservices and caching strategies, but I struggled with some specific metrics and user traffic patterns that I should've prepared for. I could tell my hesitance in this area made the interviewer a little skeptical of my overall approach.

Towards the end, I presented my thoughts on securing user data during the checkout process, which seemed to resonate with the interviewer. They asked about specific encryption methods and how I would monitor transactions for fraud. I had some ideas but lacked concrete examples from my past work, which I felt put me at a disadvantage in that part of the discussion.

The flow of the interview was initially strong, but as it progressed, I realized I wasn't drilling down enough into the technical details. I thought I had a solid grasp on basic principles, but the need to translate my ideas into specific implementations caught me off guard. I came out feeling like I had left some important points unaddressed, and that nagged at me after the interview.
