I shared a story about a project where I disagreed with my manager regarding the direction of our data visualization. We were about to present our findings, and I felt that the format was not conveying our key insights effectively. I confidently expressed my concerns and proposed an alternative approach using Python visualizations instead of PowerPoint charts.
The interviewer nodded and seemed intrigued by my thought process. They asked how I approached the conversation and what the outcome was. I explained that I scheduled a one-on-one chat with my manager. After some back-and-forth discussion, she agreed to try my suggestion, and our presentation was much more impactful, which led to positive feedback from stakeholders.
I felt a mix of excitement and nerves during this part of the interview. The possibility of disagreeing with someone more experienced was intimidating, but standing up for what I believed in felt empowering. I shared that, while my intention was to enhance the project, I also learned how to communicate effectively and navigate differing opinions—an essential skill for teamwork.
On the flip side, I was a bit anxious about how my manager would perceive my disagreement initially. The interviewer followed up with a question about whether this experience strained my relationship with my manager. I mentioned that while it created some tension at first, it ultimately strengthened our collaboration as she appreciated my initiative. That honesty turned into a learning moment for both of us, which I found to be rewarding.
