When asked about mentoring someone, I shared a story from my time in college, where I helped a freshman navigate introductory data analysis courses. I detailed how I organized weekly study sessions, making use of tools like Excel for hands-on practice. The interviewer nodded and seemed genuinely interested, which encouraged me. They followed up with questions about the challenges I faced, specifically in ensuring that my mentee felt confident with the material. I admitted that I sometimes struggled with patience, especially when concepts didn't click right away. Overall, I felt that sharing my vulnerability about that got me some rapport but it also highlighted a potential area for growth.

Despite the positive engagement, I sensed that my not-so-polished mentoring style might have raised a flag during the conversation. I noticed the interviewer scribbling down notes when I discussed my struggles with being patient. It left me wondering if they were concerned about my ability to handle similar situations in a professional setting. Still, I felt I presented a well-rounded perspective by being honest about both my successes and my learning curves.
