During the interview at Stripe, I shared a story about a disagreement I had with my manager regarding a project deadline. I felt the deadline was unrealistic given the scope of the work and the current team resources. I expressed my concerns and suggested a different approach to break down the tasks into smaller phases, which my manager initially resisted. The interviewer seemed interested in my ability to advocate for myself but also probed about how I handled tension in those conversations.

I mentioned how I kept the conversation focused on the project goals rather than making it personal. My manager eventually agreed to my proposed split of the tasks, which ultimately led to us meeting our objectives without burnout. The interviewer seemed impressed by my conflict resolution skills but did ask a follow-up about how I’d handle it if the manager didn’t budge at all. That made me realize I might have handled it a bit differently if the dynamics were more rigid.

Overall, I felt I communicated my thought process well, and it highlighted my proactive nature. But I did struggle to convey how I would deal with more challenging authority figures, and I left feeling like I could have dug deeper into the aftermath of that discussion. The interviewer’s interest in my adaptability in that situation was clear; it made me realize just how important that is in fast-paced environments like Stripe.
