Transitioning from a frontend engineer to a full stack position has been an exciting journey. With a solid background in React and JavaScript, I felt ready to take on broader responsibilities that come with being a full stack engineer. My goal was clear: to land a role at a company I admire, like Airbnb.
For about a month, I dedicated myself to preparation. I revisited the fundamentals of backend development, focusing on Node.js and Express, while also brushing up on database management with MongoDB and PostgreSQL. To simulate real interview conditions, I practiced coding challenges on platforms like LeetCode, setting aside time each day to work through algorithms and data structures.
The interview process consisted of multiple rounds, each with its unique challenges. The first was a technical screen where I was asked to solve a couple of coding problems live. The second round included a system design interview which surprised me; I had not anticipated the depth of discussion required around architecture and scalability. I realized it helped to visualize the solutions as I explained my thought process.
What struck me during the interviews was Airbnb's culture and focus on diversity. Each interviewer was not only assessing my technical skills but was also genuinely interested in my thoughts and experiences. Their welcoming approach made me feel valued right from the start.
When I received the offer, I was thrilled, but I also felt a huge sense of accomplishment. All the late nights and preparation paid off. Accepting the offer marked the beginning of a new chapter where I could contribute to a platform that brings people together.
The journey to securing this role reaffirmed my belief that preparation is key. It was more than just honing my technical skills; it was about understanding the company and aligning my values with theirs.
