Just a few weeks ago, I found myself staring at my email, heart racing, as I saw the subject line 'Amazon Offer'. It was surreal. I had prepared for this moment for an entire month, juggling my time between my final university classes and getting ready for the grueling interview process at Amazon. The excitement was overwhelming, especially as a recent grad eager to jumpstart my career.
My background is in computer science, and I felt reasonably confident in my coding skills. But I quickly realized that to land a position at Amazon, I had to level up. My preparation included intensive practice on platforms like LeetCode and dissecting system design concepts. I focused on algorithms, data structures, and particularly the “Amazon Leadership Principles.” Those principles are like the Holy Grail in the interview process. It really made me think about how I could showcase my alignment with those values during interviews.
The interview process was intense. It consisted of three main rounds: a phone screen, a virtual technical interview, and finally, a behavioral interview. The phone screen was pretty standard; I didn’t feel anything too out of the ordinary. However, during the virtual interview, I panicked. There was one question, a complex array manipulation problem, where my mind just went blank. I remember the silence stretching out for what felt like ages before I could finally piece together a solution. After the interview, I worried that I might have blown my chances.
Yet, the behavioral interview ended up becoming a turning point. I prepared several STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) stories that highlighted my teamwork skills and ability to overcome obstacles. I stumbled a bit when asked about a time I disagreed with a teammate, but I managed to articulate how we resolved it collaboratively. I felt I redeemed myself there. Being open and genuine about my experiences felt right, even when it didn’t go perfectly.
When I finally received the offer, I couldn’t believe it. I mean, I did it! From a nervous graduate to a Staff Engineer at Amazon in just a month. Looking back, it wasn’t just about coding skills but also how I presented myself in alignment with their culture. And hey, if I can do it, so can you!
The journey wasn’t easy, but it was definitely worth it. I learned that preparation, adaptability, and authenticity are key. There were definitely times I felt overwhelmed, but pushing through those moments helped build my confidence for what lay ahead. Now, I’m excited to dive in and start my new role!
Tips
Practice coding problems daily on platforms like LeetCode, aiming for at least 2-3 problems each day., Prepare STAR stories that relate to Amazon's Leadership Principles; they come up often in behavioral interviews., Don't hesitate to pause during an interview if you need time to think; it shows you’re thoughtful and composed., Simulate technical interviews with friends or use platforms like Pramp to gain real-time feedback., After each interview, reflect on what went well and what didn’t; this helps you improve for the next round.
