This journey began about four months ago when I realized I was ready to level up from my mid-level engineering role. I've been working in the tech world for a few years and felt stuck, so I set my sights on landing a Senior Software Engineer position at Datadog. The excitement spurred me on, but boy, did I have a mountain to climb.
I started preparing by diving deep into technical concepts, algorithms, and system design. I used LeetCode religiously, working through about 100 problems, while also picking apart system design fundamentals using the System Design Interview book. Juggling this preparation with my full-time job was tough, and I often found myself burning the midnight oil. The stress mounted, especially when I had a mini-panic attack as I realized I was only a week away from the first interview.
During the interview process, I had four rounds: two technical interviews, a system design interview, and an HR chat. The first technical round was straightforward, and I felt pretty solid. Then came the second technical round, where I blanked on a question about data structures. I floundered and could feel my confidence slipping away. I almost called it a day right then and there, but I kept pushing, learning from that awkward moment to prepare better for the next stages.
Things picked up again as I made it to the system design round. I felt more in my element, discussing the architecture for a hypothetical real-time analytics platform. I even impressed myself a bit, which gave me some wind in my sails. After what felt like an eternity, the HR interview rolled around, and they extended the offer that same day. I almost couldn't believe it!
This experience showed me that it's okay to struggle and stumble along the way. Not every moment was perfect, but overcoming those tough spots made the victory even sweeter. Now, I'm excited about joining Datadog and diving into new challenges as part of an awesome team. Here's to new beginnings!
Tips
Make a structured study plan and stick to a schedule, dedicating specific hours each week for coding problems., Don't shy away from system design; practice sketching out architectures and explaining your thought process to others., Simulate the interview environment. Find a coding buddy to practice whiteboarding and discussing problems under time constraints., Learn from each interview, especially the stressful ones; identify what tripped you up and turn that into a growth opportunity., Stay positive and keep pushing through the nerves – remember, everyone gets a little freaked out during interviews.
