After years of working in data science, I felt ready for a new challenge and set my sights on a staff ML engineer position at LinkedIn. My background in predictive modeling and experience with various ML frameworks gave me the foundational skills needed, but I knew the competition would be fierce. I allocated two months for preparation, diving into algorithms, system design, and behavioral questions to ensure I was fully equipped for the interview process.
The preparation was intense. I started with practicing coding challenges on LeetCode, focusing on medium to hard problems. I dedicated at least two hours daily, simulating a real coding interview environment. I also made sure to review concepts in distributed systems, as the role at LinkedIn emphasized building scalable ML models. During this period, I felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of material I had to cover, particularly system design, as it was not my strong suit.
The interview process consisted of four rounds: coding, system design, an ML case study, and a final behavioral round with HR. The coding round was surprisingly challenging, and I found myself blanking on a few questions. I had a near-miss with a dynamic programming problem where I failed to optimize my solution, leading to an awkward silence. I managed to pivot and talk through my thought process, which ultimately helped me salvage the situation, but that moment shook my confidence.
The system design round felt like it lasted an eternity, but I maintained my composure and walked the interviewer through my approach to designing a recommendation system. The ML case study was my favorite part; I successfully applied my knowledge of various algorithms to a real-world scenario. When I got to the behavioral interview, I shared stories of past projects, focusing on teamwork and my passion for machine learning.
Receiving the job offer felt surreal. I remember checking my email at 8 a.m. and seeing the message. It was relief mixed with excitement, knowing that I had overcome obstacles and ultimately succeeded. This process taught me resilience and the importance of preparation, and I’m grateful for the opportunity at LinkedIn as a staff ML engineer.
Tips
Practice coding problems daily, especially under timed conditions., Deep dive into system design; utilize whiteboarding to visualize your designs., Prepare for behavioral questions by structuring your examples using the STAR method., Seek feedback from peers on your interview responses to improve your delivery., Take breaks during study sessions to avoid burnout and maintain a fresh perspective.
