After more than five years in the tech industry, I applied for a senior software engineer role at Meta. My experience included leading projects in fintech and building scalable systems. I was excited but knew the competition would be fierce.
I spent a solid month preparing, focused on brushing up my algorithms and system design skills. I dedicated two hours each night to practice coding problems on platforms like LeetCode. Mock interviews were crucial. I found a partner to simulate the real interview experience, which helped me keep calm under pressure.
The interview process consisted of four rounds: a technical screen, two coding interviews, and a final behavioral interview. The technical screen was straight to the point, but the first coding interview was where I panicked. I got caught up in a tricky graph problem and mismanaged my time, but I acknowledged my mistake and quickly pivoted. This honesty seemed to resonate with the interviewers.
The final behavioral interview was intense. They asked about past challenges and how I'd handle conflicts within teams. I drew on my experience managing a dysfunctional team in a previous role. It wasn’t perfect, but it felt authentic.
When I received the offer, it was surreal. I almost didn’t believe it. The whole experience pushed me to be honest in my weakness while showcasing my strengths. Surviving the stress really helped me grow, and it felt validating when the offer came through after all the hard work.
