Landing a job offer as a Platform Engineer at Bloomberg feels surreal! I graduated with a degree in Computer Science just a few months ago and had been on the job hunt for months. I had internship experience, but this was my first real job. I decided to take the plunge and ramp up my preparation for three intense months, diving into areas I felt less confident about.

Preparation was key. I structured my study around data structures, algorithms, and system design - the bread and butter of technical interviews. I practiced on platforms like LeetCode and Codemia, solving at least two problems daily. The challenge was balancing my time; I often felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of knowledge I wished to absorb. Some days, I felt like I was hitting a wall, especially when it came to the harder algorithm questions; I even doubted whether I could succeed.

The interview process began with a phone screen where I nervously answered a couple of algorithm questions. I felt confident at first, but then I stumbled on one question about binary trees. I muffed the traversal logic and panicked when my mind went blank. Afterward, I thought I had blown my chances. Luckily, my interviewer appreciated my honesty and how I approached the problem. Reflecting on this now, I'm amazed that a bit of vulnerability worked in my favor.

After that, I had two technical interviews and a cultural fit interview. One of the technical interviews focused on system design, which I studied diligently for weeks. It was fascinating to create a high-level architecture for a service, and I seriously learned a lot during that discussion. I still remember the excitement of being asked to explain my thought process as I sketched out proposals on a virtual whiteboard. It felt like a real test of who I was as an engineer.

Finally, receiving the offer felt like winning a mini lottery! I was ecstatic and relieved, my stress melting away. I could hardly believe that all those months of hard work led to this moment. I still go back and reflect on how far I’ve come, and I can’t wait to start my journey at Bloomberg. Looking back, it’s clear that the preparation, being open in interviews, and having a genuine curiosity to learn made all the difference.

Tips

Set a daily goal for solving coding problems, like two LeetCode questions a day., Don’t shy away from discussing what you don’t know during interviews; honesty can be refreshing., Practice system designs using real company examples, think about scalability and architecture., Join study groups or online communities for accountability and discussion., Take breaks during intense study sessions; mental exhaustion can lead to burnout.
