Functional & Non-Functional Requirements

The Online Coupon Service is designed to assist users in automatically finding and applying coupon codes during their online shopping experiences. The primary requirements for this system include:

User Authentication: Users should be able to create accounts, log in, and manage their profiles securely.
Coupon Code Management: The system should maintain a database of valid coupon codes, their expiration dates, and associated retailers.
Instant Application of Coupons: Users should experience seamless integration where coupon codes are applied automatically during the checkout process.
Price Comparison: The service should enable users to compare prices across various retailers for selected products.
Deal Alerts: Users should receive notifications about ongoing deals or when prices drop on monitored items.
Rewards Program: The service should offer a loyalty program providing users with rewards for using coupon codes.

Additional non-functional requirements include high availability, low latency, and scalability to handle seasonal traffic peaks.

Capacity Estimation

The estimation for developing the Online Coupon Service can be broken down into several segments, such as the architecture design, front-end and back-end development, testing, and deployment.

Architecture Design: Approximately 2 weeks. This includes designing the database schema, selecting appropriate technologies, and ensuring system scalability.
Front-end Development: Approximately 3-4 weeks. This would involve developing a user-friendly interface for account management, coupon browsing, and deal alerts.
Back-end Development: Approximately 4-6 weeks. This includes the implementation of API endpoints, coupon application logic, price comparison algorithms, and deal alert systems.
Testing and Deployment: Approximately 2-3 weeks. This involves system testing, performance tuning, and preparing the application for a live environment.

Overall, the development of the Online Coupon Service could take between 11 to 15 weeks, depending on team expertise and resource availability.

API Design

The Online Coupon Service will expose a set of RESTful API endpoints that facilitate interaction with users and other services. Key API endpoints include:

User API:
- POST /users/signup - Register a new user.
- POST /users/login - Authenticate a user.
- GET /users/{userId} - Retrieve user details.
Coupon API:
- GET /coupons - Retrieve available coupons.
- POST /coupons/apply - Apply a coupon code to a basket.
Price Comparison API:
- GET /products/{productId}/prices - Get price comparison across retailers.
Deal Alerts API:
- POST /alerts - Create a new deal alert.
- GET /alerts - Retrieve deal alerts for the user.

All API requests should be stateless and designed with proper error handling and authentication mechanisms.

Database Design

The Online Coupon Service will require a relational database to manage different entities such as users, coupons, and products. Below is an overview of the database schema:

Users: This table stores user information including user ID, username, password hash, email, and reward points.
Coupons: This table includes coupon ID, code, expiration date, discount percentage, and associated retailer details.
Products: This table contains product ID, name, description, and prices from various retailers.
Deal Alerts: This table stores alerts created by users, including user ID, product ID, and price threshold.

The database will be indexed appropriately to ensure efficient querying, especially for coupon lookups and price comparisons.

High Level Design

The high-level architecture of the Online Coupon Service can be visualized as follows:

Client Layer: This layer consists of the web/mobile application where users interact with the service.
Load Balancer: Responsible for distributing traffic across multiple application servers to optimize resource usage.
Application Layer: This contains multiple microservices including User Service, Coupon Service, Price Comparison Service, Reward Service, and Notification Service.
Database Layer: Includes relational databases for users, coupons, products, and deal alerts.
Cache Layer: A caching mechanism using Redis or Memcached to speed up frequent read operations.
Queue System: To handle asynchronous tasks such as sending notifications and processing rewards.

This architecture supports scalability and modularity, allowing for independent development and deployment of services.

Request Flows

The request flow for an online coupon application can be described through the following steps:

The user logs into their account through the application client.
The client sends a request to the User Service to authenticate and retrieve user details.
Upon successful login, the user searches for products and applies a coupon code.
The client interacts with the Coupon Service to check the validity of the coupon code.
The Coupon Service communicates with the database to validate the code and retrieve applicable discounts.
Once validated, the coupon discount is applied to the total cost of the cart.
The user is notified about the applied coupon and the updated total.
Finally, the user can place their order or create a deal alert if desired.

This flow effectively demonstrates how various components within the service interact to fulfill user requests.

Detailed Component Design

To implement the Online Coupon Service, several key components will be necessary. These components will ensure that the system is robust, efficient, and user-friendly:

User Management Component: Handles user registration, authentication, and profile management. This component ensures that user data is securely stored and easily retrievable.
Coupon Management Component: Manages the lifecycle of coupon codes including creation, validation, and expiration. It connects to the database to check coupon conditions and informs the user of the discount.
Product Management Component: Oversees product data, including retrieving product information and price comparisons from various retailers. This component is crucial for presenting users with the best deals.
Notification System Component: Implements the deal alert functionality sending notifications to users when deals are available or prices drop on monitored products.
Reward System Component: Engages users with a loyalty program, tracking points earned through coupon usage, and providing redemption options for discounts on future purchases.

These components work collaboratively, enabling a seamless experience for users and ensuring the system is responsive and efficient.

Trade-offs & Tech Choices

In designing the Online Coupon Service, several trade-offs had to be made regarding performance, complexity, and user experience:

Performance vs. Complexity: Implementing a full real-time price comparison feature may significantly enhance user experience but introduces complexity in terms of API integration with various retailers. A compromise might involve caching frequently accessed price data to improve performance.
Security vs. User Experience: While stringent security measures are necessary to protect user data, they can create friction in the user experience (e.g., multi-factor authentication). Striking a balance that ensures security while maintaining ease of use is critical.
Centralization vs. Modularization: A centralized architecture can simplify deployment and management but may become a bottleneck as various functionalities grow. A modular, microservices-based approach enhances scalability but complicates communication between services.

By thoughtfully weighing these trade-offs, the design can yield a service that meets performance criteria while delivering a positive user experience.

Failure Scenarios & Bottlenecks

Anticipating failure scenarios is crucial for the resilience of the Online Coupon Service. Several potential failures include:

Database Failure: In the event of a database outage, the service should have a fallback mechanism to serve cached data, minimizing the impact on user experience.
API Rate Limiting: Accessing retailer APIs for price comparisons may lead to exceeding rate limitations. Implementing a redundancy strategy with multiple service instances can mitigate this issue while honoring API limitations.
Network Issues: Connectivity issues may hinder communication between components in a microservices architecture. Using circuit breakers and retry mechanisms can help address transient network failures.
Incorrect Coupon Validation: A system error yielding an invalid coupon validation could lead to user dissatisfaction. Rigorous testing and error logging are vital to swiftly identify and resolve such issues.

Developing a robust error handling and alerting strategy will enhance system reliability and user trust.

Future Improvements

To ensure the Online Coupon Service evolves with user demands, several future improvements can be considered:

AI-Driven Recommendations: Incorporating machine learning algorithms to analyze user behavior could personalize coupon offerings and suggest relevant products or deals.
Mobile App Development: With an increasing number of users relying on mobile shopping, creating a dedicated mobile app could enhance accessibility and engagement.
International Expansion: Expanding the service to include coupons from international retailers can attract a wider audience, necessitating localization efforts.
Partnership Opportunities: Collaborating with e-commerce platforms to directly integrate coupon applications could streamline processes and offer exclusive deals to users.

Planning for these improvements will keep the service competitive and responsive to market dynamics.
