  1. Stash Your Changes Before switching branches, it's important to save your current changes temporarily if you're not ready to commit them. You can do this using the git stash command.

  1. Create or Checkout the Other Branch If the branch you want to commit to does not exist, you can create and switch to it using the git checkout -b command. If it already exists, simply switch to it using git checkout:

   git checkout -b feature_y    # Creates and switches if `feature_y` does not exist
   git checkout feature_y       # Switches to `feature_y` if it already exists
  1. Apply Your Stashed Changes Now that you are on the correct branch, you can reapply the changes you stashed earlier:
bash
   git stash pop
  1. Commit Your Changes With your changes now on the intended branch, you can stage and commit them as usual:
bash
   git add .
   git commit -m "Add new features to feature_y"

Note:

If the branch had upstream differences, you might need to pull the latest changes before applying your stashed changes to avoid conflicts:

bash
   git pull origin feature_y

Preventing Common Mistakes

Here, it’s good practice to always ensure that you are on the correct branch before starting new work. Always verify with git branch to confirm the current branch.
