Why is Dualstack Important?
The internet is transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6 due to the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses, which limits scalability. IPv6 provides a vastly larger address space. Supporting both IPv4 and IPv6 (hence "dualstack") allows a seamless transition and maximum compatibility during this shift.
Technical Explanation
When you create an ELB in AWS, it’s assigned a DNS name, such as my-load-balancer-1234567890.us-west-2.elb.amazonaws.com
. Once you enable IPv6 support, this DNS name is prefixed with "dualstack", for example, dualstack.my-load-balancer-1234567890.us-west-2.elb.amazonaws.com

DNS Resolution and the Dualstack Prefix
When a client resolves the DNS name of a "dualstack" ELB, they receive multiple IP addresses: one or more IPv4 addresses (A records) and one or more IPv6 addresses (AAAA records). This DNS configuration allows clients supporting IPv6 to connect via IPv6, while IPv4 clients continue to connect using IPv4.
