Object slicing is a concept in object-oriented programming (OOP) that occurs when an object of a subclass is assigned to an object of a superclass, leading to the loss of any member variables and methods that are not part of the superclass. The Dog object rex is sliced to fit into the Animal object parameter, and during this process, the breed attribute and the overridden speak() method in Dog are not called—Animal's speak() is executed instead.

Causes of Object Slicing

Object slicing typically happens in two scenarios:

  1. Pass by value: When a derived class object is passed to a function that accepts parameters of the base class type by value, the additional attributes and methods of the derived class are not copied.
  2. Type assignment: When an object of a derived class is assigned to an object of a base class, only the base class part is assigned.

Preventing Object Slicing

To prevent object slicing, you can:

  • Use pointers or references: Modify functions to use pointers or references to the base class instead of objects. This keeps polymorphism intact.
